Horizon Scholar

Status: Final

Category: Piece

Duration: 7:55

Horizon Scholar is essentially a tape loop run through a digital delay pedal, and recorded into AUM. The tape loop was played and manipulated live with the pedal, while the piano sound ran through the tape deck allowing for distant harmonies and “overdubs”. It has minimal post processing, some compression and reverb, and a brief intermission of a distant old radio orchestra.

it feels like remembering a verdant summer afternoon.

Session Details

The original session files have been lost, but the setup was as follows: the Arturia MIDI Keyboard was connected to the iPad Pro 10.5” to control Colossus Piano. The audio output was routed to a small Sony Walkman using a short tape loop. That loop was then fed through a digital delay pedal, which was manipulated live during the recording, and sent into AUM on the iPad Pro 12”.

Thanks to a fault in the Walkman’s circuitry, the original piano signal still came through the headphone jack underneath the loop, allowing for layered improvisation as the track was captured.
