What it’s like to be a kid

  • kids
  • fatherhood

Today we took the girls to Eagle Creek Park and walked the trails and the boardwalk, then a fairly steep (at least for 4 year old legs) incline, and back. The girls did great and truly enjoyed the day–Evelyn told me that she wants to be a nature princess when she grows up. Bernie is still a little frightened (“there’s too many bugs everywhere!”) but overall she enjoyed it and asked to go back soon.

I’m always so focused on watching the girls on these little adventures, seeing how they react to the world around them. Evelyn walked a bit up ahead of us on the boardwalk, occasionally asking me questions (“what would happen if I ran through this grass?” “Mostly it would tickle your legs,”) but for the most part she was lost in her own world, saying “hi” to the flowers and flies. She told me afterward, “I felt like I was the only person in the world! Like when I’m in the backseat of the car, or when I’m falling asleep.”

I’ll never get tired of hearing them tell me what it’s like to be them, and I hope they never stop sharing it.
